Itun-Mokun

The MOKUN ward derived its name from the Okunkun leaves which grew extensively the area where present day MOKUN ward is located. It is the ewe Okunkun (Okunkun leaves)

That shortened to become “Makun” according to the legends. The earliest inhabitants of Makun migrated from Ipara, a town in Remo division of Ogun state, fleeing from inter-tribal wars which broke out between Ibaribas and the Egbas and which threatened to consume their homeland.

These people brought with them their ORO fetish which was named after a prominent personality among them called MERI. Meri and is co- travelers first settled at Laaga a village located about 5 kilometers south west of Igbogbo. History has it that Latufewa, one of the founders more met with Meri while he was on a hunting expedition.

The two powerful leaders became good friends and it was Latufewa who persuaded Meri to join him at Igbogbo. Meri obliged and moved his people to settle at present day Makun. The shrine of Meri (the Oro fetish)  established at Laaga at the time is still being worshipped till today
